Good-looking, stylish and seen with the best men by their side — actors Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor have more than just their debut date in common between them. They were pitted against each other right from the start, where Deepika’s debut Om Shanti Om released alongside Sonam’s Saawariya in 2007. Plus, it was rumoured that they were both vying for the same guy, a young actor gunning for the top league himself.
Cut to 2010, both actors are being wooed by top directors, A-list actors and have equal films in their kitty.Deepika is currently shooting for Rohit Dhavan’s Desi Boyz with John Abraham and Akshay Kumar, while Sonam is shooting for actor Pankaj Kapur’s directorial debut Mausam with Shahid Kapoor. While Sonam has Anees Bazmee’s Thank You and Abbas Mustan’s remake of The Italian Job, Deepika has been approached for Race 2 and is also reportedly doing Homi Adajania’s next. In terms of endorsements as well, Deepika is endorsing seven brands, while Sonam has around five.
Says director Punit Malhotra, who’s worked with Sonam in I Hate Luv Storys, “Sonam is well read, trained and does not need to be guided. Her grasping power is amazing. The best thing about her is her effortless acting. She’s someone to watch out for."
Debutant director Danish Aslam is all for the heroine of his film. “Deepika’s always been one of those smile-that-can-light-up-a-ballroom personalities. But the calibre of acting that she brought to the table has been a revelation for me. She’s spontaneous, off-the-cuff and has a carefully hidden mad streak that comes out every once in a while.”
